Introduction

Spectracom NetClock® products are GPS-based, Network Time Protocol (NTP) time server master clocks. NetClocks typically provide timing services to various networking devices. As NetClock products become more important in synchronizing critical operations, providing Legally Traceable Time® (and associated time- and date-stamps) for device logs and databases, enhanced logging capabilities are necessary.

Why is Logging Necessary?

  • Logging is a critical capability for IT security—the administrator needs to track and analyze activity on the NetClock device—such as user Auth Log entries.
  • Logging is also necessary to comply with industry regulations—such as Sarbanes Oxley—to show that the common network time standard is valid.
  • Logging of NetClock application events is required. Examples of log entries are GPS signal acquisition or loss, and journal entries on user configuration setups.
  • Logs are admissible as evidence in court, showing that the NetClock was operating normally and in synchronization with UTC, on the particular day in question.
