Top 8 Reasons Why Time Sync is Important to the Federal Government

The benefits of Spectracom’s NetClock® GPS master clock time servers directly support many of the new challenges facing federal network applications.

1) Network-centric warfare

On the battlefields of today, network-centric warfare is a reality. For any efficient network, particularly where split-second decisions determine success, including loss of life, time accuracy is a necessity. NetClock systems are used for synchronizing mission-critical communications and data systems.

2) HSPD-12

Federal agencies are required to issue new identity cards that meet Homeland Security Presidential Directive-12. HSPD-12-compliant processes will require synchronized time to support real-time authentication for access to facilities as well as electronic data. NetClock systems support controlled facilities and controlled information systems by supporting the infrastructure controlling access with synchronized time.

3) Cyber security

Maintaining network security is a top priority on the IT manager’s agenda. Synchronized time supports authentication, encryption, and audit trails. Security policies require the need to monitor network activity between multiple systems and devices. NetClock time servers allow devices and their log files to be synchronized and useful especially for digital forensics.

4) IPv6

We are running out of IP addresses. The new IPv6 standard is coming to the federal government. New NetClock systems support the IPv6 standard so your investment is protected against obsolescence.

5) Time stamping for interoperable communications/command centers

First response, agency cooperation - we continue to struggle with the threat of terrorist attack. NetClock systems can currently be found in over 4,000 dispatch centers around the country to support their needs for legally traceable time. By synchronizing the IT infrastructure to support all levels of first response to a NetClock time server, cooperation, communications and the response itself is accurately recorded.

6) Healthcare IT

New deployments are required to improve efficiencies and lower costs. The Electronic Health Record is now a reality. However synchronized time from a NetClock is necessary to improve record accuracy, secure the networks where these records exist, and enhance interoperability.

7) Information sharing

Linking disparate bits of information among various departments, agencies, and organizations can only occur if networks are operating on the same time standard. NetClock GPS time servers improve interoperability by synchronizing networks to the worldwide time standard.

8) Video surveillance convergence to the network

Security cameras are proliferating; closed circuit TV is a network application facing the IT manager. A best practice recommended by the Scientific Working Group on Imaging Technology (SWGIT) for CCTV applications describes the need for an accurate time reference to stamp each data packet in order to be useful. NetClock systems support the accurate timing of security cameras.
