Troubleshooting GPS Reception for Time Servers and Master Clocks

The atomic clocks on board GPS satellites offer an accurate time source with inherent redundancy through the ability of achieving time synchronization via signal acquisition from one to 12 GPS satellites (simultaneously). The GPS time signal is robust. For instance it is usually unaffected by adverse weather. However if the reception of the GPS time signal by the time server or master clock is problematic, consider the following:

Antenna or antenna device problem	No reception	Resistance of antenna and amplifier. Temporarily remove surge suppressor.
Cable problem	No reception or low GPS signal quality	Cable type and length
Poor antenna location	No reception or low GPS signal quality	Location
GPS receiver problem	No reception	Reset GPS receiver, enter location values
Local interference	Low GPS signal quality	Check for nearby TV and radio transmitter frequencies
